With bodies piling up, and supernatural murders on the rise, independent contractor Jim Shaw is busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. That's oddly appropriate, as disabled veteran Jim Shaw only has one leg. He's also got silver bullets, a little help from local law enforcement, and a smart mouth. Shapeshifters, fae, and vampires beware, as the Jim Shaw Universe debuts with an action packed novel of magical realism, set in small town Midwest.

Made Men An Urban Fantasy Novel (Jim Shaw Universe Book 1) eBook Seth Creamer Reviews
Seth Creamer has a fantastic writing style, suspense nailing you to the chair at one moment and comedy rolling you on floor the next. He absolutely and perfectly captures the pace and sense of life in rural Oklahoma. The main character, Jim Shaw, is an unending source of wise-cracks and smart-aleck comments that leaves the reader in stiches. Waiting eagerly for the next one.
Creamer gives the reader a book crafted with care. The book flows well. The dialog is well done. It would be of interest to these who like the genre. It would be a suitable read for an evening or two. The writer has an interesting background. Not what I would expect for this type of book. Perhaps a more academic style? I did not find the detective to be of much appeal, however. He seemed to be on his last leg. Pardon the weak joke. Never the less, good work.
****I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review****
The synopsis of this book does not do it justice! "Made Men" is what you'd get if the TV show "Supernatural" and a procedural cop drama had an illegitimate love child. The book focuses on Jim Shaw, an ex-military man who works as a contractor for the government and police (occasionally) to keep supernatural creatures in-line; everything from the classic werewolf, fae creatures, monstrous elves, and wisps so they don't hurt humans. In the world Creamer creates, all the creatures of lore and monsters that go bump in the night are no longer living in the shadows, but out in the open. They are no longer seen as just legends, but a fact of life. Shaw's job is to put the bad ones down and help law enforcement figure out who (or what) is responsible for the mayhem. Personally, I love this kind of stuff as I'm a big fan of supernatural lore and even the crass characters on "Supernatural". And while Creamer does a fabulous job, a bit more editing was needed. As it stands, his book is what it'd look like if "Supernatural" hated commas and paragraphs – which, who knows, maybe it does, but it started to get a bit distracting and it spoiled an otherwise thoroughly entertaining read.
Creamer uses his knowledge as an ex-police officer to make for a very realistic experience in a fantasy setting. The procedures, the weaponry, and the banter between the police and military types is spot on. It’s rare that these urban fantasy’s will bother with that kind of realism because, after all, when you have werewolves and vampires, what’s the point in realism? But that’s what makes this such a refreshing take on the formulaic police procedurals! But, be warned, given Jim Shaw’s line of work and background, he swears quite a lot and makes comments that can be seen as sexist. It’s never really out of place because it fits with the characters and scenarios, but be forewarned, if graphic language and gore bother you, you may have a harder time enjoying this book. It’s not any more violent then you’d see on an episode of Game of Thrones though, so if you can handle that, you can handle this.
Creamer makes such great characters that feel organic and very different from one another that I really enjoyed them and want to see them again in future books. It’s my love of these characters that has me forgiving a lot of the grammatical errors that pop up consistently throughout the novel. If it had happened a few times, whatever no big deal, but the same mistakes happen so constantly that it’s impossible to overlook. I’d still urge you to read the book despite that, but know it’s there ahead of time. Hopefully, knowing the comma issue, and some of the “unnecessary†characters and situational descriptions are there, it won’t trip you up the way it did me.
That was the disappointing thing about this book and story. It was so good with all the details (maybe too much or not enough given Creamer was a cop so he assumes the reader knows what certain weapons are), the unique and realistic characters and scenarios, the interesting twist on supernatural and urban fantasy, it’s a shame that the editing of the book brings it down. It just needs that final little polish to fix the grammatical issues and some of the oddities when it comes to his villain’s motivations to take this book from “good†to “excellentâ€, or in this case, from a 4.5 to 5 star rating. I hope Creamer either goes back to tweak this story, or his next in the Jim Shaw universe fixes some of these things as I will be sticking around to see what this one-legged contractor encounters next!
This book is about a man named Jim Shaw. He lives in a world where paranormal creatures are real and known to everyone. There are laws that protect humans from the supernatural. When the non human citizens do something like murder, Jim is called in as an independent contractor to help the police figure out which paranormal creature is responsible and how to kill it. Jim is used to doing things his own way, he doesn't care about rules or regulations and he's got a foul mouth. He's, rude and has no regard for the rules but he gets the job done. With a supernatural killer on the loose killing seemingly indiscriminately, it's up to him to find out what this is, kill it and put an end to the murder of innocent victims.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Jim should be an unlikable hero but he's not. All his insults are actually what made the book quite funny. He's not afraid to laugh at others and occasionally himself. He knows what he's doing when it comes to paranormal creepy crawlies and when he doesn't he tries his best to find out. I really enjoyed his partner from the police force Amanda. She's a tough chick and doesn't take crap from nobody. I loved the interaction between her and Jim they insult each other but don't take it too seriously and they work well together trying to piece together clues to which paranormal creature may be the culprit. Father Declan was also another interesting character. He was Jim's moral sounding board but he was also cool himself which lead to some pretty interesting moments between him and Jim. As well as several other minor characters all the characters in the book are well developed and have a role to play in the story and trying to find the killer. I loved the ending it was only slightly before the end that I kind of had an idea of who the killer might be and it was fun when I turned out to be right. I like that it wasn't expected and that thinking back there were several signs that pointed to the killer so that was interesting. I enjoyed the world in which this story exists. The idea that paranormal creatures are out in the open and that there are laws to protect humans was really cool. This was a really fun book and I look forward to reading the next book in the series and see what other trouble Jim can get into.
Paranormal Urban Fantasy done well.
The protagonist is just a guy, not a wizard or magician or part demon or any of that. Just a guy... with a smart mouth that's often in gear ahead of his brain.
The story is set in a small to midsized town (30k pop iirc) in Oklahoma. Paranormals and monsters have been 'outed' in this world build but aren't well tolerated. Jim Shaw is an independent contractor and his only 'back up' is a loose amalgamation of churches that share info and provide a bit of a stipend to their hunters, and whatever fed, state or local cops get involved once the killing starts. It's all shoestring and play by ear and not enough hands on deck.
The story flows well. The characters are fun. I hope the writer keeps going on this as a series.
