Among the Wild Tribes of the Afghan Frontier A Record of Sixteen Years' Close Intercourse with the Natives of the Indian Marches eBook T L Theodore Leighton Pennell
A fascinating read for anybody interested in the people and history of the North-West Frontier between Afghanistan and modern-day Pakistan. Written with the distinctive mixture of reticence and enthusiasm characteristic of a certain class of Englishman of a century ago, and from the perspective of a "medical missionary", this is a revealing look at Pashtun society in particular (albeit from a fairly specific point of view). The author actually covers considerably more ground than implied by the title (he describes incidents as far afield as Calcutta and spends a chapter describing his experience travelling on foot as a 'de facto' sadhu and being on the receiving end of racial and class discrimination), but the journey is still worth the effort. The authors non-dogmatic and non-doctrinal views on how to further the Christian message in a non-western culture are interesting, and those interested in how to further the spread of positive (albeit more secular) 'western' or 'universal' ideals to a wider audience in similarly unpromising circumstances may see some parallels to their own objectives - even if one suspects that the author had less overall effect than he imagined.Product details

Among the Wild Tribes of the Afghan Frontier A Record of Sixteen Years' Close Intercourse with the Natives of the Indian Marches eBook T L Theodore Leighton Pennell Reviews
Anecdotes from a medical missionary, this book could be named "Those silly Afghanis". Written with an air of Victorian cultural superiority, this is nonetheless a worthwhile book. One must push past the social limitations imposed upon the author, but it's worth the effort.
